The Ackland Art Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, and present great art to educate, inspire, and engage the university and its regional, national, and international audiences in free and open inquiry. Part of fulfilling this mission is extending the use of our building for private events.

Who can rent?

Priority for the ability to rent space at the Ackland is given to campus departments/units. Select non-profit and for-profit organizations may also be given the ability to rent for certain types of events. Individuals are only eligible to rent the Museum if they are members of the Ackland at the Vanguard Level ($5000) or above. To find out more about membership, click here.

What types of private events happen at the Ackland?

Events with light refreshments (with or without alcohol) are most common. Events with additional components (e.g. dinner, performances, tours, etc.) are possible, but may incur additional charges.

Are any types of events NOT allowed?

The following types of events are NOT permitted: weddings or related events; political or religious meetings; and fundraising events for organizations other than the Ackland Art Museum. All use of Museum facilities must be pre-approved by the Ackland Art Museum and conducted in accordance with the University’s Policy on Use of University Facilities and the Ackland Art Museum Use Policy.

When can private events occur?

Private events must take place when the Museum is closed to the public. The Ackland is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM. The Ackland is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

How much does it cost?

The base Museum rental fee is $425 for university departments/units and non-profits and $725 for other groups. Additional fees may apply. UNC-CH departments and units may qualify for fee exemptions.
