Drawing in the Galleries

Amanda Hughes leads participants in a creative exploration of a particular object in the Ackland’s collection.

For all sessions, bring paper and dry media (crayon, pencils, etc.). All levels are welcome.

Free and open to the public. No reservation is necessary.

Designed for 6- to 9-year-olds, Art Adventures sessions provide kids with a guided view of art in the Ackland’s galleries, followed by the opportunity to create take-home treasures in an adjacent art studio using newly-learned art-making techniques. Materials are provided. Participants will create binary code accessories inspired by the Intergalactic Soul: Project Lhaxx installation.

Family and Friends Sunday: Protecting Our Environment

On the final day of Way Out West explore the natural environments depicted with an eye towards protecting them for the future.

  • Meet Alan Weakly, the Director of Herbarium at the North Carolina Botanical Garden, to learn about North Carolina’s native plants.
  • Meet Julie Thomson, a Naturalist from Eno River State Park, to learn all about snakes and make a fun snake-themed bookmark.
  • Watch the last selection from PBS National Parks in ART&
  • At 3:30 PM, join Way Out West curator Dana Cowen for a Last Look Tour.
  • Enjoy exploring the art on view with a themed scavenger hunt and hands-on art-making activities for all ages

Drawing for Tweens 10 August 2019 – PM Session

This program invites 10- to 13-year-olds to look at selected works in the Ackland’s galleries and identify techniques that the artists used to make them. Gallery teachers demonstrate and teach participants technical skills, which they can then apply to their own artistic creations. A mix of drawing from works on display and creating one’s own original works is offered in each session. Materials are provided.
